Has Europe given up on industrial society?
Following the publication of his report on the future competitiveness of the EU, former European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi said he was having ‘nightmares’ about what might happen to the bloc’s economy as the EU falls further behind the US and is overtaken by China. In the past, western civilisation – with all the freedoms associated with it – was both the cause and the consequence of the astonishing success of Europe’s economies What is holding us back now? As we all become cogs in the wheels of capitalism, more and more people feel a sense of alienation and feel deprived of wider meaning in their lives. And then there’s the environmental damage. Have we reached the limit? Has Western civilisation lost its appeal? And what is the relationship between material progress and social progress?

Citius, Altius, Fortius: does sporting achievement matter?
Elite sport is a constant source of fascination. The Olympics in Paris were watched by billions. And across the Euros this summer in Germany, 2.67million fans attended games. Why does it all matter so much? Once, sporting success could be put down to a combination of sheer talent, dedication and determination. Is that still true? The countries that do best at the Olympics are the ones with the most money and the biggest sporting programmes – with the USA routinely the winners and China rising to match them. The Paris 2024 was marred by controversy because two gold-medal winners in women’s boxing are thought to have male chromosomes. Is sport ever really a ‘fair fight’ – and does it matter? Isn’t the drama just as intense, whoever is involved? What can sporting achievement tell us about humanity and progress?
