‘Kristin’ is a choreographic sketch made of a series of physical positions, through which the dancer moves. In constant transformation, the dancer passes through various situations by changing her bodily position and its relation to the space around her.
The solo is a continuation of May Zarhy’s research into the relation between memory and movement. Together with the dancer Amit Zaretsky, they explore how movement is driven by invisible forces, which are rendered visible for the audience and herself through her dancing. The solo is an accumulation of experiences condensed into a movement monologue called ‘Kristin’.
Inspired by a format devised by visual artists Ruth Anderwald and Leonhard Grond titled HASENHERZ this evening will consist of the performance of the solo ‘Kristin’, followed by a conversation with May Zarhy, and then watching ‘Kristin’ for a second time. HASENHERZ is a format appropriated from the method developed in 1918 by musician Arnold Schönberg for his Verein für Musikalische Privataufführung (Society for Private Musical Performance), where works of contemporary music were introduced to the audience of musicians and music lovers. Schönberg laid down specific rules for his society, amongst them: the piece shall be played, then discussed with the artist and the audience, followed by another performance of the same piece. This ensures that by listening (or watching) the artwork a second time, it reveals itself in different ways. This year marks the 150th anniversary of Arnold Schönberg’s birth.
