Butoh Performance and Live Painting
Gastspiel
Valentin Tszin & Theodore Matthews

The piece develops as a duet of contradictions, blending movement, imagery, and live painting.
Themes include the contrast between the natural and the artificial, fetish culture as metaphor, the boundaries between East and West, and the beautiful versus the grotesque. Lighting and live sound act as independent voices, revealing and concealing, shaping the emotional architecture of the piece.
The performance is a collaboration between two artists coming from different disciplines — Valentin Tszin as a Butoh performer and Theodore Matthews as an oil painter. The work explores the Butoh principle of holding two contradictory ideas simultaneously, like two rhythms that never meet yet define one another.
Theodore works in the visible realm — painting, texture, and image — while Valentin inhabit the internal landscape of Butoh: tremors, stillness, memory, and transformation. The performance brings these two parallel philosophies into dialogue, not to harmonize them but to place them in friction.
